MG MGB GT V8 Factory Originals Technical - diff flange angle sought
Hi guys, I am trying to establish what the correct angle of the diff/propshaft flange should be in relation to the gearbox flange before I finally finish off some chassis repairs to the rear and the gearbox mounts. Yes I can fit everything and measure then pull everything out and alter but knowing you guys, one of you has the answer already. What is the angle of the flange face where the pinion joins the prop shaft and the box at the prop shaft flange? I believe (and have been advised by other racing engineers) that this is a critical measurement as anything more than 3 degrees out from the g/box flange is likely to creat vibration or wear in the uni joints regards mark

Mark, it's not that easy if you've installed another engine and transmission as the new angle of those might not match the original MG items. Ideally the axis of the pinion shaft and the axis of the transmission output shaft should be parallel. To get a good measurment you really need to have the car assembled, or partially so and set to the desired ride height to measure the angle. To find out the original angle take the rear axle housing and set the spring perches to horizontal and then using a magnetic base angle gauge set it on the pinion flange and take the reading. Probably around 5 degrees above horizontal for most cars. If you've already set the engine/transmission angle then I'd suggest cutting the spring perches off the housing and then bolt the housing and perches on the springs until you can get the car loaded to approximately normal ride height, then rotate the housing until the pinion flange angle matches the transmission output shaft then tack weld the perches on the housing and remove and finish weld. If the peices are already finished then you can use wedges between the perch and spring to get the angle correct.

Mark, Stay under the 3deg angle.
