MG MGB GT V8 Factory Originals Technical - BOP/R distributor eliminator
| Looks like Buick has a nifty combo oil pump drive/cam sensor that they used in the late V6 engines such as the Grand National: http://www.v8buick.com/showthread.php?t=89031&page=3&highlight=serpentine+setup Look about 1/3 way down the page at the serpentine setup. Jim |

| Jim, I guess I'm not seeing what you are. The only thing I see that looks out of place is the small canister shaped item on the top of the timing cover with the electrical connector coming out of it. I would think that would be a cam position sensor, but I don't see any tie to the oil pump. I can see the oil cooler lines coming off the adaptor plate on the far lower side. Is it the whole timing cover assembly that's the neat item? I could see where this might really help with clearance on a blown car such as yours by getting the distributor out of the way of the blower drive and allowing more electronic control of the ignition timing. |

| That's it Bill, the cam sensor unit drives the oil pump the same as a standard distributor would. In the GN cars this also gives clearance for their standard rotation serpentine belt drives which put both the alt and AC on the driver's side. Apparently this means a crank sensor has to be used for the ignition unless the cam sensor also incorporates an ignition sensor, too bad you can't see that in the photos. I'll see what I can find out on that though. Might be handy. In my case, with MS-II I don't need the cam sensor and I already have a smaller custom built part for the job but it's nice to know it's there if you need it or want to go to a crank trigger and not have a superflous distributor head with no spark plug wires sitting there looking useless.
