MG MGB GT V8 Factory Originals Technical - aluminum flywheel and locating pins missing
I was just putting the new pressure plate and disk on from Victoria British (pressure plate , disc and throwout bearing all for $199). My issue was in the lack of locating studs on the $500.00 aluminum flywheel from D&D. I am using gr 8 bolts with lock washers to fasten it down, but the bolts are not a tight fit in the holes that they go through (in the pressure plate, the threads in the flywheel are fine). Let me tell you what I did and will try. Okay, I have a nice accurate lathe, so, I made 6 mild steel bushings that have to be tapped into the holes in the pressure plate and the bolts holes in the bushings are tight. So, rather than have a couple of locating dowels, I am taking all slack out of the bolt holes. This has made me feel confortable that the pressure plate is truly centered, using the mounting bolts rather than a dowel sticking out. (I have in essence made shouldered bolts...) The other solution would be to finding a shouldered grade 8 bolt that would be the correct size shoulder, but I think this would be unlikely to find the exact ones. Does anyone have any thoughts (a pat on the back for being clever, or telling me how stupid what I have done is?) Before I put the transmission on, I would like to hear some feedback on what I have done. Personally, I can't think of any problems doing this. Can anyone think of any potential problems? Oh, and I torqued the 6 pressure plate bolts to 25 ft-lbs. is that right?

You should be fine with that Richard, but have you checked with clutch suppliers for the correct bolts? Although they will not fit quite as snugly as your bushings they will be a better fit than standard grade 8. Your torque sounds correct to me but it wouldn't hurt to check a torque chart. Locating pins are not a standard on all clutches and it is pretty common to locate with the bolts. But if you balance an engine you will want to be sure the pressure plate is pinned. Jim

Richard, sounds like you have a winning plan. Missed you at Hallett, figured you still had some work to do on your conversion. Hope you can make it up to the KC All British this September with the V8.
