MG MGB GT V8 Factory Originals Technical - '67 tachometer conversion problem

I've converted my original early positive ground impulse triggered tach to negative ground and recalibrated it to work with my Buick 215. Everything worked well with the stock Buick points distributer. But like everything, I didn't leave well enough alone! I recently installed a Mallory Unilite vacuum advance distributer. Along with this I installed a new coil that requires a ballast resistor. The new distributer works well, with timing easier to control. But the problem is that the tach now works well until it reaches about 3000 RPM and then just stays there reading 3000 RPM. The question is: how is the impulse different with the new set-up? Is it the ballasted coil? Is the trigger from the Unilite different? Maybe someone has seen this problem before and can give a solution besides removing my original Smith's tach.
