MG MGA - wiper delay unit
I have been experimenting with an electronic windscreen wiper self build kit which I hoped would be suitable to use on my mga. The last time I drove it in light rain I got a little tired of being a human delay unit and this has prompted this project. The unit I tried at first was from Maplins and although it seemed to work off the car it proved to be unsuitable for the MGAs slow wiper speed. It has 3 different delay times but unfortunately it switched power on and off so quickly that the wiper motor only had a chance to move a fraction. This meant that the wipers moved across the screen in delayed, small half inch jerks until it eventually activated the parking circuit. I think that it is designed for more modern motors which move the wipers much faster across the screen. So when I noticed it in the catalogue,I bought and fitted the Moss wiper delay unit which cleverly uses the original switch to program the delay to anything between 3 and 30 seconds. It seems to work fine so far although I have not used it in the rain yet. It was quite easy to fit, the hardest thing was to get my head and shoulders under the dashboard! And if anyone recalls the expensive burnt-out wiring disaster I caused the last time I attempted to connect up the sidelights. This time I took my own advice and isolated the battery and also fitted an in-line fuse! Colyn

Thanks for that Colyn, as my carburetter cooling fan has put the kibosh on summer, I might invest in one of those just to guarantee we never have rain anymore! P.S. If that works, I might get a hard-top to see what that stops!

Hey Lindsay, could you mount a set of snow tires also? Cheers, Larry
