MG MGA - What is correct length of accelerator cable
The one I just bought is 45" overall (inner cable itself) with an outer case of 37". That is about a foot longer than the one I'm replacing and it seems too long. If I route it directly from the "witch's hat" on the passenger side firewall it stick up above the hood line. - Ken

Ken, Are you sure it is an accelerator cable and not a choke cable? You can cut the inner and outer to match the one you are taking off. You may have to remove the end cap off the outer before you cut it, so you can reuse it. Pull out the inner, and cut the outer using a sharp cold chisel on a steel surface. Put the inner back in, and then cut it also with a chisel. Be sure to clamp the new cable near the oil pressure gauge flexible pipe, using a small black cable tie or similar, to ensure it does not touch the labels on the valve cover. By the way, accelerator cables from Cecilia come the right size. Peter.

Ken, where did you get the cable? I got mine from a Moss supplier and it had the same outer cable length as the one it replaced. I have replaced my worn out SUs with a Weber. The only way I can make the SU cable work is with a push configuration rather than a pull configuration. I obviously need a longer cable, hence my question. Don

Don - the cable is from Scarborough Faire, and I checked with Cecilia who double-checked with Bruce Woodson (Chairman of NAMGAR). The length is correct. According to Bruce it is that long to allow removing the valve cover without unhooking it from the carbs. BTW, the quality of the cable is quite good. This is not a Moss part - Cecilia has them custom made. - Ken

Just buy a rear brake cable for any standard bicycle. It's long enough to remove the valve cover without unhooking at either end. It is important to use the metal ferrule on the end of the shrouding, otherwise the plastic outer will creep down the metal casing and gradually leave you without any accelerator travel.
