MG MGA - Unusual spring fitting

A photo from a MGA on Ebay is attached.
Any ideas what the fitting is at the bottom of the spring?

I can take a guess. Install one thick round plate, one long fine threaded bolt, and one female threaded cross bar long enough to capture the spring coils. When you tighten the bolt it could pull down and damp out (disable) one or more coils of the spring. Result would be slightly lower ride height and somewhat higher spring rate, perhaps to the liking of the competition types. It may improve competitive handling, especially for early cars with no anti-sway bar (where rear roll stiffness is too high relative to front roll stiffness). Like a fat sway bar, if may prevent lifting of a rear wheel in a fast tight turn.
