MG MGA - Tufrided rocker shaft
| I ordered the "tufrided" rocker shaft from Moss. The surface hardening process leaves a grey film on the shaft, but at the same time the film can be scratched off. Putting a newly bushed and reamed rocker arm on the end of the shaft removed some of the grey film. I will need to lap the rocker arms so should I go ahead and remove the grey film? Any thoughts on the best process? I understand that the tufriding hardening is quite thin. Thanks, John

| According to my informed sources in Tuftriding, the shaft is immersed in hot cyanide compounds, creating a tough, resistant surface that improves fatigue resistance. The hard layer is usually very shallow, only penetrating around .005. Still, I doubt very much that any process (fine sandpaper, steel wool, etc) you use to remove the grey film will be a problem. .005 is a lot more than it sounds. Cheers, GTF |

| Tuftriding is used on camshafts as well. The instructions say to leave the grey coating as it is. But I am sure that you are supposed to polish it off the cam bearing surface? So maybe you should polish it off the part of the shaft that runs in the bronze bushes?? CP |
