MG MGA - Starter switch
| I have had considerable trouble with starter switches on my two MGA's over the years (my "sparky" friend suspects that my replacements were made somewhere in Asia and there are, or were, ineffective quality controls affecting their sale in OZ). I dare say that I am too "gentle" in pulling the knob! Prising the switch open and cleaning the contacts is successful but it is nigh imposssible to hide the "molestation". In desperation I bought new solenoids for each car and now use the dashboard knob/cable system to just operate the solenoid! Works perfectly and the new solenoid is very well hidden under the heater trunking. I mounted the solenoid on a thin mild steel strip which is attached to the firewall using the mounting screws holding the narrow "blanking plate". I note that MGB's had an electric solenoid, another instance of the factory anticipating/avoiding potential future problems! |

| The replacement starter switch with the white plastic has been a problem for a lot of people. I posted details of an autopsy on one 8 years ago, but apparently the same part still has the same problems. See here: http://mgaguru.com/mgtech/faulty/ft004.htm |
