MG MGA - Repairing lug on SU fuel pump coil wire
Whether it was my heavy handiness or it was on its last legs, the lug on the wire from the coil to the terminal screw broke off during the dismantling of an SU pump that I am building up as a spare (I know it would be easier to use an after-market pump but I like fiddling). My query is, what is the best way to repair - unsolder the lug and reuse, add a new bit of wire and shrink wrap? What is the wire size and where do I get it? Also is the lug special or can I use any lug with right size hole that suits the wire diameter? Regards Mike

Electrically any of the options you mentioned would work. I think unsoldering the lug and reusing it would be best to give the best mechanical connection as well as one that would resist vibration the best.

Unsoldering the existing lug and trying to open the tab to replace the wire results in a broken tab 99% of the time. E-mail me at Sufuelpumps@donobi.net with your postal address and I'll send you a new lug and a lead washer that goes between the lug and the nut above it. A short piece of magnet wire soldered to the lug, then to the wire coming from the coil and covered with some shrink sleeving should get the connection back in working order. Cheers - Dave

Thanks David - (got your email about the Australian contact). Now I realise why the lug was such a tight fit on the terminal screw - I didn't realise there was a lead washer involved! The MGA Workshop Manual does not show this detail in the exploded view - but factory Parts List does (I should have looked here first). Mike
