MG MGA - Rejuvenating holes?

A couple of holes where the door linings screw on to the door frame have become oversize and screws don't grip anymore. What is a good way to rejuvenate the hole other than welding them up and starting again? I don't want to use oversize screws as they wont match the others (10 total) - I was thinking of superglueing a small block of wood behind the frame.

There are a variety of plastic inserts that accept screws, also metal clips that do the same. You have to open up the hole to receive them, with a drill or file - most are square so they don't rotate. But a wood block is also a good idea as it leaves the surface flat. Use epoxy, not instant glue.

If you can get a dolly or other heavy flat device behind the hole, you can hammer it flat. That makes the hole smaller and work hardens the metal so the screw will hold better than new. Works even better if you start with a block that has a small center drill "Pip" in it, to guide the displaced metal back toward the center of the hole.

When I removed my door panels I found over thirty holes in each door frame from where previous owners had repositioned the original screws so I decided to weld them all closed and start afresh. If you hold a brass block (about 1.5" diameter) behind the hole to support the molten steel & prevent the hole widening you can do the lot in a half hour or so. It was a lot easier and quicker than I'd expected and gives you complete freedom when fixing new trim panels. But when I redrilled for the new panels the first hole was a bit too large and I stripped the thread so I decided to glue (Araldite) a 1/4" thick hardwood block behind it rather than mess up the paint .........Mike

I recall reading somewhere that a split pin inserted head first into the hole then opened worked well for this.
