MG MGA - RB310 regulator
After fifty years my RB106 is toast. I did the resistance tests on Barney's site and mine aren't even close. I have a couple RB310 regulators. Anyone used one an an A? Any experience with Moss' pre-tweaked regulators? I have one on order but the weather in nice and I'd like to get out this weekend and my best option is the RB310 Regards, Bill

Bill - Consider sending your toasted RB106 to Bob Jeffers of Wilton Auto Electric. He will send back a solid state regulator in the original case (all shined up). Contact Bob at: http://wiltonae.com/home/index.aspx Cheers - Dave

Bill I would second Dave's suggestion. I picked up a ratty used regulator on eBay and sent it to Wilton. Even better than the buff job is a much more stable output. I have not yet tested the unit, but can tell that it is much more stable, particularly at idle, than the origonal Lucas unit. Sorry I am not familar with the RB310. If you want to drive over to Seattle I would be happy to lend you a NOS spare RB106. :-) John

Turns out the RB310 was dead too. The date code was 1957. You'd think they'd build these thing to last longer ;-) Thanks for the recommendation on Wilton. If the Moss unit isn't the answer, I'll give it a shot. Funny thing- I replaced the generator brushes about 5k miles back and the were already worn out. To be precice, I used the older brush with the lead coming out the side and, as the brush wore, the brush socket sheared off the lead. I chucked the armature in my lathe and found the commutator was .010" out of round. Like the regulator, the generator is original and I don't think it was ever turned. Anyone else run into this? Thanks again, Bill

Followup- installed a "fixed" one from Moss last week. It works and I am back on the road. Bill
