MG MGA - Rating of Amps
What is the simple explanation of amps rating. For example, I am looking at a push-on spring off switch to operate a windscreen washer...it is rated at 2 amps, where others I have seen are rated at 0.8 amps, 6 amps, 11 amps etc.

It means that the device (switch) will handle the current safely without overheating. The biggest life-shortening thing for switches is the arc resulting when disconnecting DC motors or other magnetic devices.

you need a switch that has a higher amp rating than the device that it is operating. Look for a label on whatever you are installing and it should state both volt and amp specs, then buy a switch that has a higher amp rating at the specified voltage.

For automobile use, switches should also be rated for DC not AC current.
