MG MGA - Muffler and engine temp

Hello all! Its been a while. I hope this finds you well and running.

I think this makes sense but wanted to check in on it.

Since I first got my MGA its run at 185-190 degrees. Even after my rebuild it ran at 190 degrees.

This morning at 6:30 am (don't ask why) I decided to put a new muffler on the car. (I tried repacking the old one but it lasted about 200 miles)

Anyway the car is now running at 200 degrees? I suppose it makes sense that increased back pressure would increase heat, but I thought I'd ask anyway.

On the good news front the car is much more pleasant to drive and my nagging dieseling problem has disappeared.

Thanks as always.

Many years ago for racing purposes I removed the muffler of my car, using a direct pipe ending in a trumpet shape, and the temperature dropped around 10 degrees.

Over-heating is a common problem with MGA's, perhaps due to insufficient air coming through the grille/radiator. I note that at some meetings in the USA (when the cars were "officially" entered by the factory or dealers) some grille slats were removed. I could write a book about MGA over-heating problems (having owned and driven MGA's for over 40 years!) but suffice it to say that when my MGA's start getting hot I have the radiator cores rodded out and this overcomes the problem for four or more years. It gets very hot (sometimes over 100 in the old money) here in South Australia in summertime but the cars often run hot at other times (if it is some time since the cores were cleaned out).
