MG MGA - Fuel gauge/sender problem - any ideas?

I have a new MGA fuel tank (PO had a FORD truck tank), a new MGA sender (about 80 ohms to 0 ohms), and an MGB fuel gauge (also fitted by the PO). This gauge is different from the MGA gauge in that the needle moves up slowly when the ignition is switched on.
Initially, when the tank was almost empty, the needle disappeared off the scale over the full mark.
Then I filled the tank, and the gauge showed 3/4 full. I drove the car for 150 miles, and the gauge did not move. I tried reversing the wires on the back of the gauge because they are not marked B and T, but this did not change anything.
I have removed the wire at the sender, and the gauge sits at "E". I have grounded the sender wire, and the gauge goes to "F".
I have now fitted an MGB voltage stabiliser between the battery supply and the gauge, to provide a fixed 10 volts supply, but the gauge sits between 3/4 and full, even though I know that there are only around 2 gallons in the tank, i.e., about 1/5th full.
I have checked the sender body, and it appears to be grounded to the chassis. The sender has a green/black wire and the gauge has this wire and a green wire, via the stabiliser.
Any ideas on what else I can try to get this gauge to read correctly?
Peter.

The MGB gauge will not work with an MGA sender. The MGB sender is 20 ohms when full and 220 ohms when empty. The MGA sender is 70 ohms when full and 0 ohms when empty.
