MG MGA - Fitting a new top
| Just in case someone out there is planning on fitting a new top, but wondering when it will be warm enough to get the material to stretch nicely over the frame, you don't have to wait! I will repeat a tip I found in the archives. This comes from Ralph, Essex Ontario, thank you Ralph, if you are still out there. Place a fan heater inside the car, I used a small 2.5Kw one and leaned it against the gear lever to angle it up. I protected the leather on the seat uprights with a towel so that they didn't get dried out by the hot air, and after giving the top a few minutes to warm up, went ahead and fitted it. It worked beautifully, the top didn't get too hot, just warm enough to be good and flexible. Outside air temperature was about 5C, and inside my garage was not much warmer, so I was wrapped up a bit, but the soft top was evenly warm all over. I am pleased with the result, and don't think I could have done a better job, even on a warm summers day. |
