MG MGA - Fender holes
| I am setting up to drilling and tapping the holes for the 3 screws holding the rear fender flange to the B pillar. (I did not use captive nuts, but intalled 3/16 steel plates to be tapped). The fender flange I have completely rebuilt. I have seen photos of the holes in the fender and they are in fact slots with an angle cut. What is the reason, vs a simple hole? |

| Those 3 holes you are drilling will hold the shutface on. Without captive nuts you will lose any flexibility in positioning the 3 oval head screws that hold it on. The flange with those slots is held on by the shutface panel. The fender and the shutface panel must be pefectly positioned in their final orientation to drill the hole you will be drilling. Custom fit no doubt. The open slots you refer to were probably made that way to ease assembly. |

| RJ, I used the SFP to place the holes, after a long process of getting the flange to mate the B pillar and the door gaps etc, so I am confident of the fit. If I had pre-placed some captive nuts I am sure I would not have got them to align in the end. The old captive nuts I cut out did not allow much movement anyway. The holes in the flange I will enlarge to allow a bit of wiggle room and for the Countersunk screw heads to seat as this protrudes through the SFP. I was just curious about the slots - OK you can slip the fender in or out with the SFP screws loose in place, but I don't see the point. |
