MG MGA - Door hinges
This is somewhat connected to my damaged A pillar. The hinges there seem to have suffered. The PO has brazed in some sheet metal into the stops so it only opens 60 deWhat is the correct open angle? Also, one of the two wings is slightly benttowards open. I assume the wings should be flat and parallel when closed? I could straighten it by inserting a shim and using a vice.

Art, The open angle depends on the style of hinge used. See here for info http://mgaguru.com/mgtech/body/bd103b.htm Fran

Art, I just finished a 60 Coupe in which the hinges would allow the front door edge to hit the A pillar before the hinge "built in" stops. It sounds like someone added some metal so the hinge would not allow the door to hit the pillar. I have noticed that the factory intentionally dented the outer face of the A pillars to allow for clearance of the door edge. In my case it was not enough and the door edge would hit the pillar. Before you make any changes to the hinges, fit them to the doors and check out clearances. Have a good day! John

John, what you say makes sense - the A pillar was hit and twisted inwards, so the DPO must have compensated on the hinge rather than straighten the pillar, which I now have to do!
