MG MGA - Battery cable

Hi,

I want to put a new battery cable on the car, the cable from the battery to the starter switch.
the old cable measures 25mm˛ , that is about 4 awg.
Barney say's the cable shoud be 1 awg about 42mm˛ only 35 mm˛or 50mm˛ available .Is his cable 50mm˛not to thick for in the "P cable clips" under the floor?
does anyone have any experience with this?

could you use one half of a pair of jumper cables.
Steve, or go to a welding supply store, the leads for arc welding might be large enough.

Serge,
This link may give you an idea of sizing for P clips. If nothing else buy a couple of bigger P lips, Tony

Wire sizes are slightly different between British wire gauge and American wire gauge. My 1 awg cable may be a slight upgrade after original production, but I bought it from an MG dealer in 1977 with a BMC original part number on it. Apparently lots of people report having 2 awg cable in their MGA, so likely they were delivered that way from the factory. 0 gauge is overkill for sure, might be harder to install and secure.

There is an extended essay on my web site about why larger cable is waste of time, including calculations of very small differences in voltage drop with high current.
