MG ZR ZS ZT Technical - ZR buying advice
Dear all, I am currently a MGF owner, and I am looking to buy a ZR 105+ to use as an every-day commute car ( the MGF will only be used at weekends etc ). I will be looking to buy a ZR in the next month, and I would appreciate any buying advice / tips etc. that anyone may have. Any common ZR problems to look out for? Thanks in advance.

Hi Mike, nothing major to look out for. Trim is a bit flimsy, esp. the later models. Rattles from rear shelf and door trims etc. Early Zeds seem to be better. Engine - no different to your MGF except an easier to maintain cooling system. Gearbox - no problems Watch out for CDL motor noises, seems to be a problem on 2003 onwards, they are about £120 to replace. 2004 onwards alarms seem to be problematic (the remotes are oval with an MG logo ion the middle - on occasions i've had to replace the remotes and the alarm ECU when it's impossible to switch the immobiliser off. Apart from that, they're a good buy. Try and get one with 16" straights and side skirts, a popular option so there's quite a few around. Steve

The 105 or the earlier 214 is a "Lab Rat!" the engines on these smaller MPi K series are excellent. and with global warming, outrageous tax on petrol etc etc a very sensible and enjoyable purchase. If you can stretch to it a Rover BRM orthe earlier Vi in immaculate conditin is a top car. I borrowed a Rover 25 CVT once, for a small automatic it was actually pretty fast. Just watch out for the HGF phenomenum and enjoy.

have you concidered the diesel? I had one and miss it very very good in real world driving - instant response very torquey motor. my 160 is not as good!
