MG ZR ZS ZT Technical - Tyre Sizes & Makes for 18's

I have just bought myself a new set of alloys for my ZT.

These are 7.5J X 18 wheels.

I currently run 225/45 18 on my straights, but now I have the opportunity to change these sizes, although I will probably end up swapping 2 tyres over, as they are almost new.

Does anyone run 245/40 18 on their 7.5 wheels, if so, are there any issues.

Any other tyre sizes anyone uses on this size wheel.

Also what is the best/cheapest tyres to go for, any problems with Avon ZZ3? What about Federal SS 595 tyres?

What about quiet tyres, are there any better tyres for less road noise? I currently have 2 new Avon ZZ3 and 2 continental tyres, and the noise is terrible on some roads and ok on others depending on surface.

Cheapest would be the Maxxis available in 225/45 or 245/40.

I am using these currently owing to a reduced financial position at time of replacement but so far I have no negative comments except to say that the wet weather performance of the original Michelins (I had three sets in 65k miles) was far superior, so caution is necessary.

As to the size, I chose 245/40 on my straights and there is enough clearance all round although elsewhere an ex-Longbridge development engineer was adamant that the tyres may catch. They may well do in a track-day environment but I don't do track-days, and the real bonus for me is the slightly bigger bead on the wall that protects the rims. However, next time I will probably go back to the Contis 225/45 18. But the car does look good with the wider rubber...
