MG ZR ZS ZT Technical - strange noise from ZT 135 D

Living up here in Gods own country I don't have much occasion to stand in traffic jams but today I was stationary for about 30-40 seconds in neutral when the engine note changed, revs dropped and a "dry whirring" noise started. I stopped as soon as I increased the revs. I havn't had time to check the oil yet but other than that anybody got any ideas?

Oil ok. Only done 12K miles but it sounds like the clutch thruster bearing.
