MG ZR ZS ZT Technical - Porous engine block?

Hi

I'm posting for a friend for some advice. He owns an 02 ZR 2.0L turbo diesel and after coolant loss his garage has told him that his engine block is porous and will need replacing, is this a common occurrence on this model as I have no idea as i drive a "reliable" MGF!!!!!

Cheers

L-series uses a cast iron block. I am not aware of these going porous. The cylinder head is however alloy - and that is a more likely place to loose coolant I'd have thought?

Difficult to advise without knowing what work has been done to come to the conclusion that the block is porous, but over all, I am a little sceptical of this.

Any L-series experts in the house?

On one of the other forums, there is a member that has a ZS diesel and he had several head gasket failures. I'd agree with Rob on this.

There are certain engines from certain chassis number at a about 51 registration to 03 reg that did have pourous blocks.
The problems customers complained off was a loss of coolant and when the dealerships tried to find it they could not see one. After alot of investigation and the removel of the sump it was found that the block was infact pourous. Although no traces were ever found in the oil if you left the sump off over night and kept a pressure tester on the cooling system the next day you will see coolant dripping off the crank and pistons.
Apparantly these engines were manufactured by and for Land Rover and after 03 reg Powertrain took complete control of the engine and only made them for MG Rover.
