MG ZR ZS ZT Technical - Peco big-bore back box
| My ZS came to me with one of these on the car, plus the original in perfect condition in the boot. The Peco has always knocked over bumps. Early on I had a look underneath to see what I could do, to find the rear rubber mount on the body bar but pushed up out of the way, and a plastic cable tie in its place. The first thing I dod was to remove the cable tie and refit the rubber mount. Didn't help with the knock, but did eliminate an annoying buzz I had noticed. As the buzz had been there all the time and the knocking only occasionally I did feel slightly better off. With the onset of Spring a couple of weeks ago (since vanished) I got underneath again determined to stop the knocking once and for all, and was contemplating having to 'adjust' the body or box bars that the rubber mounts fits on. I found that when waggling the box from side to side the entry pipe was hitting the anti-roll bar, and when waggled up and down it was hitting the bumper reinforcing. I also noticed that the rubber mount was partially split, so that was the first thing to deal with. Halfords only had one on the rack (PSM54C), labelled as being for a 91-on Escort. Same mounting centres, but about 50% thicker. Only just over a quid so worth a try in preference to ordering or trying to find a Rover one somewhere else. Despite its extra thickness it went on easily, and probably because of its extra thickness it holds the back box much more firmly, so now it doesn't hit anything when waggled, and doesn't knock over bumps. It just grieves me that it took a Ford part to do it! |
