MG ZR ZS ZT Technical - MGZR Starter Motor problem ?
I have a 2002 MGZR 120 and recently I have had starting problems. I unlock the car , the immobiliser is disengaged and yet when I turn the key nothgin happens.all the dash lights up normally but the engine does not turn over........no click , nothing. I have to turn the key on and off several times until eventually the engine juumps into life. On some occasions if I hold the key in the on position for a few seconds the engind suddenly starts. Any ideas what could be the cause ?? I'm assuming it's the starter motor ????

Sounds more like battery to me? Just had to replace the battery on Helen's 2002 160. 4 or 5 years is a good life for your average battery (assuming you have the original factory fitted one still in place). Hope that helps. DC

sounds like ignition switch fault to me next time fault occurs try tapping the lower steering column surround while holding key in the cranking position should determine if the switch is faulty.this is a common problem i have seen on many occasions and switch is available as a seperate part from ignition lock regards andy

Had a similar problem on my older car. Was the starter motor power feed cable had come loose from the starter solenoid. Worth a check of both leads to check they are tight. regards
