MG ZR ZS ZT Technical - MGZR DIESEL NOT VERY WARM
| Hi Our MGZR Turbo diesel is a cracking car but have notice that she takes ages to warm up (about 3-4 miles)Even then the heater is not wonderful. Is this normal or would a new thermostat help? Cheers Tony/Bev |

| You can check the operation of the thermostat quite simply. Warm up the car from cold, feeling the top hose or top of the radiator. You *should* feel the engine warming up gradually, but the top hose/radiator not at all, until the gauge gets near to its normal point at which time the top hose and radiator should suddenly get hot. This is certainly the case on older classics, although I haven't had occasion to try it out on my ZS. It is pretty cold at the moment, which will make the engine take longer to warm up, as it is getting icy cold air blown over the crankcase i.e. surface cooling. Also if the temp gauge gets up to its normal position that is already an indication that the thermostat is working as it should, my ZS shows exactly the same position no matter how hot or cold the weather - in the UK at any rate. A weak heater could be due to any number of things - water valve not operating properly, blocked heater hoses or passages, blocked air-ways e.g. from leaves etc. |
