MG ZR ZS ZT Technical - Distributor Question
| March 18, 2007 Hello to all MG people, I own a 1980 MG/MGB LE. The problem is I don't know exactly what distibutor is in my car. The numbers that Haynes gives out for this year do not match what is on the engine. THIS IS WHAT IS ON THE CAR AND ENGINE NOW 1980 MGB LE BUILT: 6/79 #GVVDJ2AG503671 ENGINE: 1800 - #18V883AEL 041112 DISTRIBUTOR: #41814A 45DM4 >>---> 3681 LUCAS - ENGLAND PATENTED AMPLIFIER MODULE: Located on RIGHT SIDE WING VALANCE _______________________________________________________ The motor is RED and seems to be the ORIGINAL paint. It is faded to almost a very light ORANGE shade. The engine as far as I know should be BLACK. Where some of the paint is worn off is BARE METAL, that is, no sign of Black color. HAYNES REPAIR MANUAL is showing the Engine as # 18V883(CC)with ELECTRONIC DIST.- 45DE4 #41693 that is to be in the car. So you see I now am puzzled as to what settings to adjust valves, timing, air gap and so on. I could really use someones help on this matter. It may not even be that big of a deal, but I'm fairly new to the MGB and it's workings. Your help and insight would be very much appreciated. Thankyou for your time, BARRY CRUM - Pennsylvania rbcrum@atlanticbb.net |

| Barry, this isn't really the right section for an MGB question. However, I also own an MGB as well as a ZS180, so I can answer your question. The 45DE4 distributor was the original type of electronic ignition distributor fitted to the B. This type, known as the Opus (also nicknamed Opeless), was prone to problems and many were replaced under warranty with the 45DM4 distributor. HTH Ralph |
