MG ZR ZS ZT Technical - Coolant problems with K Series
| It is probably one of the most common threads on here that the Kseries engined Rovers and Mg's have a coolant problem. The main reason for Headgasket failures is because of overheating of the Engine. Coolant levels in the Expansion tank only needs to drop 13mm for a risk of Headgasket failure to occure. Causes can be any of the following so get them all checked out ! 1, Pressure caps not holding correct pressure. 2, Most obviously - leaking pipes, hoses or Radiators. 3, Plastic Inlet ManifoldS Leaking - some just need new gaskets but it has been known for the Manifold itself to have a crack or wear where the coolant runs through it. 4, Heater Matrix leaks in the footwell inside the car 5, Cooling fans do not work when engine reaches certain temperature. 6, Cooling system not been blead up correctly and does not circulate round efficiently causing "hotspots" 7, Coolant pumps leaking 8, More seriously Cylinder liners have hairline cracks that are very difficult to detect. 9, Pre 2000 reg cars- Head located down with plastic dowels and not steal ones, causing slight movement of the head when engine is running and causes silicon beading on headgasket to wear. Numbers 8 and 9 are not now where near as comon as the others and are normally a last resort of nothing else is found. |
