MG ZR ZS ZT Technical - Another ' strange' knock
Another prob with daughter's ZR.Whilst driving along there is an intermittent distinct knock from what appears to be the vicinity of the driver door hinge area.Well,it's definitely on the driver's side but like so many strange noises could be anywhere in the general vicinity. At first when I found a loose connector block on the ledge above the fuse box underneath the dash I thought it was that but having taped over that to render it silent the clank/knock persists.I have tighted everything I can down( I don't really want to go inside the door if I can help it) but the clonk is still there. Now this may sound like a daft question but is it possible that there is a pendulum attached to the drivers seat- belt within the door pillar that could be swinging around as the noise seems to happen most when on rough surfaces or accelerating/stopping? The noise goes away on a good road and steady driving. If it is the seat belt pivot(or rell) is it possible to access it to wrap something round the innards to sound deaden it? any advice appreciated.

I had strange "rattles" coming apparently from beneath the dash on the drives side (RHD). Traaced eventually to a loose engine mounting. In this instant it was the one beween the top of thr engine (cambelt end) and the front wing. Apply your spanners to it, it may help, and only takes a few seconds. Reference to strange noises, I had one that sounded like something heavy sliding around the boot. This turned out to be a tin of sweets in the glove pocket, yet passengers in the back had said that the noise was in the boot! Conclusion; noise can be generated anywhere in a ZR!!!!

"is it possible to access it to wrap something round the innards to sound deaden it?" Possibly, if you wanted to potentially disable its locking! You might be able to prove or discount the seat-belt reel as a source if you move the belt in and out or lock it when the noise is occurring. Like AG says, they can come from anywhere, and seemingly have the ability to 'throw their voice'. I've got a rattle on my ZS that seems to come from the passenger B-post (seat-belt real?) but the usual occupant thinks it is coming from the back.

<<Whilst driving along there is an intermittent distinct knock from what appears to be the vicinity of the driver door hinge area>> The door hinge on my Rover 25 knocks under braking and accelerating. Try holding the door (tightly) when you should hear the knock to localise it. You could try driving with an open door, but that is riskier.
