MG MG Y Type - YA tire question (yes, another one)
OH YES! I've read all that has already been said about tire replacement on a YA. In conclusion, I have decided on replacing my 15 year old tires with non-radial 4-ply tires for a variety of reasons. I currently run 500/525-16 Dunlops. New Dunlops cost $209 a piece. Whereas Excelsiors (home brand made by Coker Tire) are MUCH cheaper ($92). My spare tire is an Excelsior and the look satisfies me. And I have pretty much decided I would like to upgrade to a 550-16 size Excelsior tire. It's the one whose diameter and tread width is really the closest to the 500/525-16 Dunlop. I already know about the slight difference in cross-section dimension which means that a spare has to be partly deflated in order to fit in its compartment. That's not the problem. I already now about the 3 inch wide rim it has to fit unto, or else there might be an insurance issue if ever it wasn't originaly designed for such a narrow rim. I will consult with Coker on that issue. I don't want to embark myself on a rim widening modification. What I would please like to know are your general comments about the Excelsior: good, bad, problems, etc. Thank you in advance.

I run with 500/525x16 Dunlops. Got them about 4-5 years ago from Vintage Tyre's Canadian agent in Nova Scotia, contact on the site.I have used 5.50 and 5.75 in the past, they work well. The only problem is that thet won't fit in the spare tire compartment and deflating them is not very useful as when you need the spare you have another flat or nearly so.I think the solution is simply to leave the 500/525 as the spare and just get four 5.50s On the T-ABC list there have been numerous discusions on tires and as I recall the consensus was that Excelsiors are OK. Dunlop copies made in India I think. Terry

Last time I needed a set I bought a set of 16 inch 525s from Coker - very reasonably priced and that included shipping to my door - and they were bias/cross ply too. Paul
