MG MG Y Type - YA sidelights

My metal finishers say they cannot re-chrome these without damaging the red plastic inserts.
I seem to remenber seeing new ones listed somewhere, but cannot now remember where. Also, although listed, could they actually supply them?

Are these just a tight push fit? I can't seem to get the old ones out without fear of damaging them irreparably.
Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Tony

Try Gregory's Autoparts Co. at www.gregorysautoparts.co.uk and you want their part number 00371.

While you are there, you might want to check out the price of just simply buying new 1130 sidelights as rechroming the originals is likely to be expensive in comparison.

If you do just want to replace the red dots and rechrome your originals, yes they do just pop out when pressed from above I think (reinsert the new ones by pushing up from inside). If that doesnt work then they must be press on from outside, release by pressing up from inside - one or the other.

Hi Tony
Paul's comments are spot on. Another point that you may wish to consider is installing flashers in the sidelight. I dont know how your flashers, if indeed you have any, are arranged atpresent.

Stafford Vehicle Components in Tamworth provide a very neat combined sidelight and flasher which work out to £35 a pair. They work very well and the externals of the Y are not visually affected by the fitting of an inappropriate flasher!

Definitely Jerry and Tony, this is the way to go. The MGCC Y Register do a very handy little data sheet (Y Sheet #4) on Fitting Flashing Indicators with Semiphores too if you can get hold of it. This covers the wiring mods so that you can have make to have the best of both worlds! This was co-authored by David Pelham and myself.

Thanks Paul, thanks Jerry.
I like the idea of combined sidelight/flasher units. & will certainly look into this as the flashers I have at the moment are on ugly brackets fixed to the front bumper.
