MG MG Y Type - Y-Type Overriders
I received this email from another list this morning. Perhaps it is of interest to Y-Type owners as well. I've edited out the gentleman's email address so he doesn't get spammed, so if interested in his product, contact me and I'll send you his info. ------------ Greetings to all, I have contemplated this for a long time and am currently researching the prospects of reproducing the overriders for the EXU. I believe the overriders are the same for the YT but I have never physically compared them side by side to confirm. Initial research indicates it will be an expensive task and can only be made cost effective if there is a significant demand. If you are interested in purchasing reproduction overriders please contact me off list at(email address edited out - contact me for his info) My intent is for the overriders to be made of steel and the same quality as original. Previously, I know there was someone who reproduced them in a bronze type casting. I know what they look like because I have one. If anyone knows who owns this mold maybe this could be a cheaper alternative. Again, I would like to talk to whoever previously reproduced them or researched this same topic. I don't want to reinvent the wheel or in this case the overrider. Also, for all EXU owners, there is a complete rear bumper set now listed on EBay which includes overriders. My sense is there are a number of EXU's out there plus a number of Y cars that still need these items. Maybe with a concerted effort, we can solve this problem. Please pass this on to any Y folks you know. I am not part of their web groups. Thanks to all and a good Holiday! Doug Pelton

Hi Steve and Doug, I have looked in Let there be Ys and there is no evidence to suggest that the over riders were any different on the EX/U to the general YT or YB format. Although I would appreciate David Pelham and David Lawrence's confirmation on this matter I think I may be fairly safe! With respect to the remanufacture, if I am correct Doug, there is a guy in the UK who already does a cracking job of making the correct, slender, YT/YB over riders (as opposed to the T Type ones that many Ys can be seen to sport) and that is Bryan Purves. A link to Bryan can be found on the Suppliers section of the Links page under Coachwork and Upholstery. Thanks for the offer though. Paul

Yes, Bryan Purves does produce super YB over-riders. He supplied two which are now on my front bumper but I'm still waiting for the other pair

I received and replied to Doug Peltons message on the T-ABC list. The overriders for the YT/YB and TC EXU are the same. IMHO MG took the entire front and rear bumper assemblies off the YT EXU and stuck them on to the TC EXU where they somewhat spoil the look of the car. The only visable difference is that on the TC EXU rear bumper there is a plinth in the centre with the MG monogram. Originally most TC EXU owners did not like the look of the bumpers and took them off. Now with the swing back to originality in restoration all TC EXU restorers want them back and there is a big shortage. The bumpers and overriders when they appear on E Bay(seldom) get high prices. BTW the Ford Prefect used the same overrider. Terry

If you are a bit barrasic, ( broke), you can use Morris Minor chromed-plastic ones; they need a bit of trimming to suit the Y's bumber profile, and are very cheap. Morris Minor Centre Bath, London and others will sell them to you. They are very similar in profile to the TD ones, same ones used on the YB. NC.
