MG MG Y Type - Y type brake cylinders
| Hello all, Well, it's time to start once again on the YA rebuild of UMG 284. It's been a long time but chassis has been blasted and painted, engine and gearbox rebuilt. House move completed so it's time to get stuck in while the going is good. While rumaging through the parts, sorting out those required to obtain a rolling chassis I've noted that the brake cylinders and handbrake cable assembly are in a poor state of repair. Are there any options available from other non MG vahicles or will I have to bite the bullet and go for the expensive new option if they are available. I expect the cylinders could be resleeved but the brake cable assembly is in a sorry state. Thanks Alan |

| Alan A very useful production/book from www.mgytypes.org is the Alternate Parts List by John Lawson. This advises that the rear brake cylinders are the same as MG TC fronts, and they are. These are available from Moss Motors and NTG. Also the front cylinders are pretty unique on the YA and YT so you will need to bite the bullet on them. However, they (and the rears) are available from NTG. Advantage of buying new cylinders is that they will come with all new plungers and springs. You can also of course send your originals away to be resleeved - there is a supplier listed for this on the Links page at www.mgytypes.org too, but you will then have to get plungers, springs, spring retainers and seals. It is expensive either way, but the investment you are making is one that will save your life, so what is a couple of £s or $s? Paul |

| Alan: I had the original cylinders re-sleeved with stainless liners, and the master cylinder was done at the same time. The result has been a system which has performed pretty much perfectly since the car went back on the road in 1997. So it really is worth doing properly, as Paul says. The other thing you might consider for an all-new system (I'm assuming you're using new seals and new non-ferrous brake lines?) is to use silicone brake fluid. I don't want to reopen a discussion here on the subject, but the life of the system is greatly extended, and after 12 years the cylinders are as clean and corrosion-free as they were when everything was assembled. | AllanG - You could also try J & L Spares - see the Links page at www.mgytypes.org for details - they normally do master cylinders but may also be able to do wheel cylinders. They were recommended by an MG Y owner. Paul |
