MG MG Y Type - Worn Oil Pump
After a major overhaul of the XPAG with attention to clean oil ways I only get an indicated 40psi and almost nothing when at a warm 700revs which is less than pre overhaul. The engine is a very high mileage veteran so I changed the pressure release ball & spring which had a groove worn on the ball. I suspect that the pump pressure release orifice is worn and so not forming a seal with the ball. Has this occured to others?

Hello Bryan. I have not seen a seat worn to the point where a new ball would not seal. Did you check the end float of the pump gears? And was the pump cover grooved? These are the two major wear points on the oil pump. As I talked about in another thread the gears will wear into the body at different rates. So when refurbishing the pump the gears have to be ground to length for each bore. I do this on a surface grinder. This allows everything to be square and parallel. Be sure to put the gears on the shaft the right way round, the one with the groove in one face goes on the driving shaft groove side into the body. Butch

Are you sure it is the Oil pump and not the short piece of rubber pipe that connects the guage to the block pipe? These are known to perish and then weep oil (see Hints and Tips page). Paul
