MG MG Y Type - Wipers
problem with wipers in that they are not engaging with motor to work. They can be operated by turning knob but not with motor . Coments appreciated as there is lots of wet weather here.

I would take a look at the wiper motor to see if it is running, if not it could be the old problem of poor contact on the switch mounted behind the drivers engagement knob. If OK remove the three small hex screws from the wiper motor gear box cover plate, the coupling rod can just be lifted off. Check that the wiper blades are parked, and then the inner helix cable which engages the two wiper spindles can be pulled right out [about a yard long], so if it broken only a short end will appear.

As well as the comments above I had the same symptoms that you describe and it turned out to be the "gear" in the box beneath the wiper control knob. You need to take the lump of wood off that's beneath the wiper knobs to gain access. Take the box apart and clean everything in sight. See if the gear engages or whether it is worn. Stuff some grease in before reassembly. Make sure the outer of drive cable is properly anchored.

Forgot to say that if you email me I can send some digital pictures. Unfortunately when I tried to load them in the last message I failed miserably.
