MG MG Y Type - What fuel (Australia)

As we are about to hit the road again seriously, (after the hole in the block caused by the gear drive on the oil pump shearing is repaired :-0) I thought I should ask what fuel the other Aussies are using in their Ys. The local servo suggested using PULP with lead replacement additive, but I have a vague recollection that the old girl used to run on standard (back in 1964 when it last ran).

I think that standard was around 92 octane, which would be fairly close to the current unleaded??

What do you use?

David,

Cant answer the question directly but the XPAG in the Y was designed when petrol was really diabolically poor - indeed just after the war patrol was so poor it was a virtually non-descript designation called Pool petrol in the UK and the Y did fine on it. I personally wouldn't recommend wasting money on High octaine stuff just get as regular gas as you can, and if you are unsure of whether the head has been converted to unleaded or not I would squirt some lead additive into the tank about every fourth or fifth fillup.

Not a terribly scientific answer - but a practical one.

David I run the YT and TF on ordinary unleaded but add a measure of additive at every fill up. The measured amount depends on how much petrol I put in and there are guidelines on the bottle. I use the orange top bottle - cant remember its name. Call me if you need more help (02) 6557 6400. Rob

David - I'm with Paul on this. I run my old SA on ordinary unleaded with 50ml of Nulon lead additive thrown in each tank for good measure. Not sure if it really needs the additive, but I doubt it will do any harm to the engine (don't know what it's doing to me!) The SA has about a 7:1 compression. On the other hand, I run my Magnette (with an MGB engine with 8.5:1 compression or thereabouts) on the highest octane fuel (Optimax, etc 98 octane) with the same 50mls of additive. It seems to need it.

Cheers...
