MG MG Y Type - What does the Y type steering wheel look like?
| I bought a very nice steering wheel at a bargain price last weekend at a car show. The wheel fits my MG TD, looks great, is same color as the wheel that came on my 51 TD, but the center piece is too large and has three set screws instead of the single set screw as on my original. Anyone know what I bought? I'm very happy with my purchase, but I would like to know where this steering wheel began life. Maybe a Y type? There is a part number inside the center... 3170. The wheel is like new and has a brown rim. Thanks Sid |

| Sid The Y steering wheel is essentially the same as a TD - or to be more correct, the TD is essentially the same as a Y since the TD is a derivative of the Y :-) However the Y and YB (and YT/EX(U)) being fitted with turn signals (trafficator semaphore arms on the Y and YB, but flashing signal lights on the YT/EX(U)) the Y steering wheel also had a turn ring on the outside of the horn push that operated a clockwork mechanism to control timing for the signals. All other YTs used the simpler steering wheel that was then later used on the TD. Finish of the horn push and turn ring were brown bakelite, and the rim of the steering wheel is a lighter shade. | Paul How many set screws are on the larger diameter YB inner horn ring? My new wheel has a darker brown bakelite rim but a beige tan inner part. It fits my TD, but has a larger horn ring part. Thanks Sid |

| Sid The Y has only one set screw just as the TD. This applied to all models. From what you say yours is not a Y wheel. It could be another contemporary Morris or other Nuffield Group product one though. Paul |
