MG MG Y Type - Waterpump questions
I fear my waterpump is starting to leak a bit. So before I start tearing it apart I have some questions; 1. How serious is a little leakage (only a few drops). Can it suddenly develop into a large leak, or will it last for a long time to come? 2. Were does the leak come from? I've read something about a carbonring or are there other seals that can be the culprit 3. Are all XPAG-waterpumps interchangable; does the TF pump fit, too?

Hello Willem. If you are seeing a drip you should replace it while at home. It is a lot more difficult to replace one by the side of the road on a hot engine. Yes, it can suddenly develop into a large leak and spray your coolent all over the inside of the engine compartment and down the side of the car, messy. The leak comes from either the carbon seal that rides on the face of the impeller or, in the later versions the rubber that holds the carbon seal cracks. The other thing that happens is the water in the coolent can get on the bearings and cause them to seize. The carbon seals for the early pumps are getting hard to get. If you rebuild the pump, the seat that the carbon seal rides on needs to be flat!! and smooth with no grooves. Out here we are converting the pumps to a standard pump seal and seat. As far as I know all the XPAG water pumps are interchangable. Try to get one with the six blade impeller rather than the older 4 blade, that is specially important here in California. Last year, I drove across the desert in July in 115 deg weather in my TD, no problems. There were some pumps, about 15 years ago, that the flange that fits up against the block was too wide on one side and the outer edge needed to be sanded down to make it fit. Butch

Many years ago I just drove my YA into the garage and left it on blocks. Now I have at last got round to repairing the car I found that the water pump leaks although my records show that it was replaced shortly before lay up. The moral of the story is that I should have removed the pump, and stored it in a dry place.

Bryan - either that or should have used it! :-) Paul
