MG MG Y Type - Water ingress through drivers footwell
On my recent rally one thing we noticed (especially going through a ford) was the torrent of water squirting up from around the steering column and pedals over the drivers crotch. Not very comfortable and not a good look. I presume there should be some sort of grommit for these? If so who sells them? If not, is it a case of judicious deploying of duck tape?

Hi Mark There should be a sleeve around the lower steering column ... but not around the pedals. NTG can do these. So it will have to be either judicious duct tape or else more judicious entry and progress through fords! Paul

This ingress of water is a common problem around the pedals and sometimes the steering column. It also occurs where the floorboards bolt to the footwell. The answer is to use bathroom sealant around the floorboard/footwell joint and the steering column aperture [as the rubber grommet unless perfectly fitted will let water and fumes in]. You could I suppose fit a splash plate so that water is deflected away from the slots in the front drivers floor board and/or fit a flexible piece of rubber or plastic nailed to the underside of the floorboards which helps to seal the slots for the pedals [although you dont want to restrict the pedals at all]. I think this was also a problem when the cars were new - water of course can also get past the windscreen as the rubber surround is seldom perfectly fitted and modern replacements are seldom satisfactory in this respect. I think there is an article from the early 50s on the site which mentions water dripping on the drivers lap - I think its the 1953 review in Motor Sport? I try to avoid splashing through deep water!
