MG MG Y Type - Vibration problem
After driving my car (Y4086 on the website)at 50 mph for about an hour on a first-grade road recently between Melbourne and Geelong, a vibration began throughout the car, as if the wheels were out of balance, so I backed off and travelled at 35 mph for remainder of the journey but it was still apparent, although to a lesser degree. It happended once before on another long drive, so I had the wheels balanced and aligned, had the tail-shaft balanced but don't really know what could have caused it, then or now. Rather disconcerting. What else could it be please? Leigh Wallace, Melbourne, Australia.

I'd have a good look at the tyres first Leigh - they would be getting warm after an hour. Look for lumps all over - tread and sidewalls. Maybe a wheel weight fell off ?. Check the propshaft bolts are not working loose. Is the vibration related to road or engine speed - does it go away if you depress the clutch at 50 MPH ? A friend used to have a similar problem - he used to make it go away by quickly depresssing and releasing the clutch at highway speed (worn input shaft bearing !). This would "centre" the cluch plate and the vibration would disappear. That's all I can suggest at the moment.

Leigh The other thing to check would be the wheel (lug) nuts and make sure they are all snugged up. If they are not, or the wheel is not sat properly on them then you will be getting vibration from that ... with potentially big problems ahead! Also, your steering column should have a felt material bush in the top of the inner and outer columns. Often times this is omitted as it is an absolute swine to get in. Check if it is there. If it isnt, get one and persist in fitting it! Check Steering wheel nut too, and also outer column clamp tightness. Under the car, check the steering rack nuts for tight too. Finally, check your king pins, trunnions and wheel bearings for play and replace as necessary. Paul
