MG MG Y Type - Valve Stem Oil Seals
I am converting YB 1066 to unleaded, and I am using an Unleaded Conversion Kit purchased from NTG. I also have a Head Gasket set, bought as a seperate item, also from NTG. Unleaded conversion kit contains 8 valve stem oil seals ( small rubber rings) Head Gasket Set contains the same 8 rubber rings and in addition, 8 flat rubber washers in the same pack. Can anyone tell me the purpose of the rubber washers please? Diameter of hole in the washers is the same as that in the rubber rings, and appear to obviously belong on the valve stem? I can't find any reference to these washers in handbook or other literature. Also, Cylinder Head Nuts are fitted with steel washers underneath.A mechanical friend thinks these washers are not required, and may not be advisable? HELP AND OPINION APPRECIATED Many thanks. Pat Kiely.

Good morning Pat Best people to tell you what the rubber washers are is NTG - give them a call and ask for Mike or Paul. Hate to disagree with your mechanic but yes there should be flat washers under the head nuts and under the valve rocker hold down nuts. However, not just any old washer. You do not mention whether or not you got a full stud set with your unleaded kit or not. If you didnt, when you are onto NTG have them send you a full set of NEW head nuts, studs and washers and throw your old ones away. WHY? I hear you ask, Becuase your old ones will be stretched and could snap. I have just replaced the head gasket on an MG 1100 (ADO 16) and thought I could get away with it. Everything was back on the engine including the carbs and I was tightening up the last head bolt to 40ft/lbs ... and it snapped. Not fitting a new set of nuts, bolts and washers just isnt even worth asking why not - I promise you! Finally, toque-down. Torque the nuts on to about 75% of torque through the required sequence, then tighten up again in the required sequence to 100%. Then slacken off all in required sequence and then re-tigthen before slackening off all in required sequence again and then re-tigthening for a third time. WHY? This gets the maximum torque evenly spread on the threads of the nuts or some such metalurgical explaination. I dont understand this stuff ... but I have learned the hard way about following instructions!! Good luck, Paul

Hi Paul, Than you very much for your help and advice. Conversion kit does not include cylinder head nuts, studs, or washers.I will take your advice and renew them. I will also ask NTG about the rubber washers which were included with valve stem oil seals. Thanks again, Pat Kiely.
