MG MG Y Type - University Motors & Collector Plates

What is the historical significance when one has a car that originated from "University Motors"?

Also, the plates that come with a car, do they have some sort of added value (historical or otherwise) when they begin by «UMG» or «MGY»?

In Canada, we have nothing that compares to those 2 seemingly significant historical characteristics, that's why their importance is unclear from my perspective.

University Motors were an MG dealership located in a part of the UK called Middlesex. In the UK the licence plate system is used to denote, amongst other things, the original place of purchase for the vehicle. In the case of 3 letter plates the last 2 dentote this. So ?MG was allocated to Middlesex.

Entreprenuerialism made the University Motors guys go and buy from the government as many UMG and YMG plates. In the UK it is a huge thing to have personal plates so this is kind of a status thing. University Motors also did minor little embellishments to the cars they sold to make them a little more special.

The value, if it is there, would really probably only have kudos in the UK. Hope this helps,

I have secured OWL-543 for my Y-Saloon.

A little piece of history & it suits the car too.

Just need a nickname - any famous "Owls" in history ?.

All our MG's have names, except the Y-Saloon !.

Surely with that registration it must be called "Wise",pronounced "Y's".

How about HOOTY ? We in the USA have a restaurant called HOOTERS. It does not refer to owl.
