MG MG Y Type - Unique or not2

Right, the last one got some good responces. So what about this;-

Morris developed the X sreies of engines for its smaller saloons and commercials. It began as a 1140cc ohv engine, with a much smaller stroke than most other Morris unit. It revved well, and ran very smoothly. MG had it developed to 1250cc and used it as the XPAG. It eventually grew to 1466cc in the TF, so why was it never fitted to the heavy YB?

Discuss.

Wasn't the 1466 XPEG block harder and therefore more expensive to make? Besides that, the TF1500 was for those Americans lusting after cubic inches and I don't think the YB was a run-away sales succes in the States, so we Europeans (yes, that includes GB) had to make do with the cheaper 1250?
A 1500 Y would be nice, I know a Dutchman who has been converting his LHD YB to MGB running gear for the last 25 years; I wonder if he will ever finish....

As mentioned before, my YB is fitted with a 1500 TF engine. It is Very sporty, especially with the 'improved' suspension/brakes. Would have been a good move on the factory's part, but they were about to move on at that time. Doubt they wanted to invest any more than needed on what was basically a '30s car.

The only difference between a 1250cc block and a 1466cc block was the moving slightly of the cylinder centres. On the 1250cc there is water all round each bore, but on the 1466 the cylinders are siamesed; each pair is joined so no water between them. This is quite a normal engineering fiddle, the BMC 'B' series went the same way when made 1789cc. The 1250cc block would be no more expensive to make than a 1466 block, only the boring machine would need slight adjustments for the new bore centres. Rumour has it that the later Wolseley 4/44 blocks were in fact 1466 ones, but under-bored for 1250, that is why the racing lads like pinching the Wolseley engines.
Neil Cairns

Somehow I was under the impression that the 1500 block was sensitive for overboring, exposing the water channels. I'm probably confused by the efforts of people trying to overbore a 1250, hence the attraction of a rumoured underbored 4/44?
