MG MG Y Type - steering wheels
| Some time ago I started a thread under this heading for advice about cracking where the spokes meet the rim. I acquired a replacement steering-wheel at Beaulieu and sent it away for recovering only to find that the spokes were no longer joined to the rim except by the bakelite covering. So I obtained a new wheel which has now been covered and fitted and except for the lack of mottled effect is very satisfactory. As a result I now have the original steering wheel from my YB available and would be happy to hand that on freeof charge to a good home, together with the tube of "Magic Bond" epoxy putty which I had bought to repair the cracking where the spokes join the rim. But I do not know what the state of the metal where that join takes place which is of course covered with bakelite so it would be up to whoever would like the wheel to check that. | I stripped a wheel from a TD and found something different from most. There is no strap going around the steel rim and folding over the spokes. They are welded directly to the rim. It is definitely not an after thought. This is an original in every way. There is one strange thing about the 1/4" rim. on the outside edge there is one protrusion that looks something like a pop-rivet,but it is welded to the rim. I will take photos tomorrow. Sandy |
