MG MG Y Type - Steering rack grease nipple
Does anyone know the thread size and type on the grease nipple on the steering rack on a YB? Ever since I replaced the boots on the rack, and filled it with oil, the nipple has leaked. Unfortunately, my drip tray is not quite long enough to reach from the rear of the engine to the steering rack! While it might be just a sticking spring or ball, I want to replace the nipple with a new one in a single operation to minimise the oil loss. Therefore, I need to have a new nipple ready in the other hand as I remove the old one. I have a supplier, but he has several different thread sizes. Mike

Hi Mike, The "oil" nipple should be 5/16 BSF. Hope this helps.

Mike: the oil in the rack isn't under pressure so you won't lose much when the nipple is removed - just what is in the area of the drilled hole. Good luck getting at the old nipple - it's not in a very convenient position, is it? Tim

Thanks to both. Sorry about the 'grease' in the title. I know well that it is oil as half of it went up my sleeve when I filled the rack. It took me a week to get rid of the smell. I will order a new nipple with confidence and fix one leak on the car. I know that fixing the others will be more difficult - I will keep the drip tray handy. Mike
