MG MG Y Type - Steering Collumn
Preparing one of my two Steering Collumns for re-chroming, I realized that they where of different lenght. Could it be that YTs and YAs/YBs had different lenghts ones? Checking LET THERE BE Ys did not give a clue either. However, on page 35 the author shows a photograph and mentions "sometimes unsightly gaps can be seen after a a restauration" - could this be that non original steering collumns had been used? The below mentioned collumns both come out of YTs - but which is of the correct lenght: Version A: 2'2 1/2" (26 1/2") = 672 mm Version B: 2'3 3/4" (27 3/4") = 705 mm Both steering-units are of the latter type, alas consisting of two halve sleeves, as referred to in the Y-Bible on pages 36 to 38. | You are correct Anton, YT have different length column to that in YA. It is my understanding that the longer fits the YT & the shorter the YA. The same applies to the sleeve. The gap problem usually stems from the position of the slip ring inner collar on the shaft - if the locating lug is broken off it is easy to fit it too far down the shaft, and then the outer and sleeve follows - leaving a gap at the top. |

| DEear Tony Thank you for your answere to my request. Unfortunately, I could not reply earlier, since whenever I tried to open the Bulletin Board the computer would labour for a long time, without any results. I then sent an e-mail to Paul Barrow, the webmaster - who apparently solved the problem. Is there an explenation to your suggestion that the YT has the shorter version collumn? I actually am under the impression that the shorter one belongs to the YT: At least, when I stripped my verty original, inital YT, some 20 years ago, I marked the short version as comming out of the YT....
