MG MG Y Type - Starter troubles
Has anyone else experienced the starter case loosening fron the mounting flange ? I found the fillister 1/4-26 BSF bolts to be only engageing half of the threads in the flange on mine. The bolt is six inches long but realy needs to be about 6 3/8 to get the max holding power and maybe a spring washer in there. Try to get a longer bolt is a waist of time. Just make it yourself. This happened twice to me. I was able to just retighten them the first time and the next time they stripped out. Good thing these cars are light weight makes for pushing them back to the garage less strenuous.

A bit of locktite usually stops them undoing. Similar bolts are fitted through the dynamo, but that does not get the shock treatment as the starter does. NC.

This might sound like a daft question but every time I use the starter I cant help but think how not being 'pre-engaged' it bashes the ring gear...is it possible to fit a pre engaged type - I dread having to renew the ring gear one day.....

David, The ring gear is pretty tough. If any damage has already been done, it has been done, if not, dont worry! If its going to happen, it will. If you have to pull the gearbox out for changing the clutch or you are hauling the engine anyway you can always inspect it at that time. Once out of the engine, it is a fairly easy job for a machine shop to sweat the old one off and a new TD one on. Paul
