MG MG Y Type - seperating the manifold
| I've purchased a surplus Y manifold and carburettor from a serial Y-killer (no, not Francois) to do some experimenting on. As you know the inlet- and exhaustmanifold are a one piece casting. Because of this the inletmanifold is warmed quite rapidly by the exhaustmanifold which improves cold running. Downside of this is that the inletmanifold will get to hot for optimum mixture-density, causing lower performance. I think it was Neil Cairns who suggested that this hot inlet was the main cause of the Y's lower output, when compared to a TC/TD XPAG. In a lot of A-series engined Mini's the situation is the same and Vizard advises in his "Tuning the A-series engine"-bible to remove the connection between the manifolds. I'm going to try this on my surplus manifold. On the A-series that's a simple job with the grinder, but the Y manifold may prove trickier. In addition to that I'm going to modify the carburettor as described by Vizard. Has anyone tried this before or have any useful suggestions? I'll keep you posted about the number of halfshafts I break with these supermods.... |
