MG MG Y Type - semaphor

What is my problem?..The right hand semaphore goes up fast and the light flashes..The left semaphore stays down or sometimes reluctantly goes slowy up or I can put my finger on it and it will move..Is there a simple thing wrong..The bulb looks okay...Thanks...M

There are a number of possibilities - poor connection, dirty connection and general dirt in the mechanism, need of lubrication etc but probably the biggest cause is a breakdown on the coil of the electro magnet.

The answer to the first 3 is relatively easy, the fourth is not that difficult either - you just need a new Lucas SF40 trafficator! The do come up on eBay from time to time but you need to buy a NEW one not an OLD one as if you buy an OLD one there is no guarantee you will be any better off.

Check out the Links page on www.mgytypes.org - Gregory's under Electrical is a good bet off the top of my head.

Also, you should check out and buy a copy of the Datasheet on Trafficators from the Regalia Page (you can read up about it on the Book Review page).

When I rewired my car some years ago, the performance of the semaphors was astounding. I put it down to poor corroded connections, the nice new wires and properly soldered connections giving much more power to the solenoid.
