MG MG Y Type - Roof lining

Does anyone know what to do when all the wood (cardboard? Wood rope?) used to tack the roof lining etc. is all perished can you buy the same material originally used somewhare or what does one do? Any advise very welcome. Many thanks in advance.

I have used 1/8" leather straps. If you get raw leather it is much better as it holds the little nails as they bend over. If you have a harness shop they have the leather or even a good shoemaker if you can find one. They are extremely rare here in Florida.

What I used was thin strips of fiberboard cut to just slightly oversized width of the channel and then I used a woodwork mallet to ensure that it was firmly in place. If you cut it too narrow it will fall out and if you cut it too wide you wont get it in, but just right and it is a treat. Mount it so that the open fibers are facing you and the top and bottom are what is in contact with the top and bottom of the channel and the nails will grip in it well. If you mount it the other way round you may have problems penetrating the surface with the small nails and a light hammer.

Ian ,I think I can help you.I have a complete dismanteled roof lining with all the wood strips and in the meantime I found the rear window blind arrangement you where looking for.

I re-used my wood rope & other bits although pretty fragile, by giving them a good soaking in PVA wood glue (the thinner the better) & then letting them dry out. When thoroughly dry you can then nail/ tack/ staple or whatever to the stuff. Rather a messy business but it worked well - 11 years on & the headlining is still looking good, although I could be accused of bias!
